Rumor: UK magazine unveils all new GoW2 details

After getting our new Gears of War 2 announcement hopes up over the leaked EGM article only to have Cliff Bleszinski deny it all, we get word that next month's issue of UK magazine X360 will feature exclusive new GoW2 details as well. And, if the leaky news source can be trusted, we're in for one hell of a bloody good ride come November.

With no actual magazine scans to view or any way for us to confirm the news, the contents of X360 magazine's GoW2 article were recently posted over on GameTrailers' forums for all to analyze, pick apart and question. If the list can be trusted, we're in for a whole mess of exciting new Gears additions including a new flamethrower called the "Scorcher", a new "Wingman" gametype that pits five teams of two against eachother and the announcement of a new mobile bullet shield to take cover behind. You can check out the complete (and totally unconfirmed) contents of X360 magazine's Gears of War 2 article after the break. And we must admit, there isn't a darn feature we can complain about.

Also, remember kids that we're still treading in rumor territory until this X360 info can be confirmed. So, we advise keeping your excitement level to a minimum, because we wouldn't want to see your fanboy heart crushed if the news turns out to b

Epic sequel already "raising eyebrows" from the press

Just a week after its first press showing, Gears of War 2 is already receiving flack from the mainstream press for its "level of gore and detail".

"[Gears of War 2] certainly attracted attention for its realistic visuals and battle scenes, but caused some pause when game designers showed off a new attack players can use in the game," the article reads.

"In the demo, the player can use the chainsaw to cut a person in half, starting at the groin and moving upwards. Also, players can pick up the corpses of fallen enemies and use them as a 'meat shield' to protect themself from enemy fire as they engage in battle from behind the corpse."

That's a "corpse" that you can clearly see Marcus snapping the neck of, even in the Xbox Live video, yes? (Though we suppose Azfamily isn't going to be much happier knowing the poor 'meat shield' is alive...)

The site hardly lays into Gears 2, but to be honest the sequel didn't look that much more shocking than the first when we saw it. But a chainsaw to the crouch - ouch.

Buy Nathan Drake's gun, if you must

It's hard to play through Uncharted: Drake's Fortune without wanting to be Nathan Drake at some point or another. Well you may not be able to look like him without major cosmetic surgery, but you can dress like him and, now, fondle his weapon.

An airsoft replica of Drake's gun is available now for $170 at King Of Swords and comes with a free aluminum carrying case. For the full specs check out the site. It's a pretty replica, certainly, but we'd much rather put it in a glass case and stare at it than actually shoot it. Perhaps that's just us.

New Resistance 2 Weapon Revealed

1UP.com editor Garnett Lee interviews James Stevenson about Resistance 2 multiplayer.
The new weapons which are mentioned are the Marksmen and the Minigun.

The Marksman is apparenetly a mid-range sniper rifle that is semi-automatic, but it is said to be just as powerful as the L23 Fareye so this could become a formidible weapon.

While the Minigun was previously announced, details of the secondary fire have been revealed. It allows the user to put down a tri-pod, which means the user then cannot move. However, a shield is put up infront of the user making them almost invincible to attacks from the front. However, they will still be weak from behind, or a well aimed shot from a sniper.

It's been a long time coming, but Haze finally makes it out this week. Free Radical's story driven FPS has been delayed almost countless times since its intended release last November. Now, at last, we're able to begin a Nectar bender that will, hopefully, last until June 12th. Here's the full release list:

US Games

* SingStar
* Haze

EU Games

* Call of Duty 4 (GOTY Edition)
* Haze

Asian Games

* UEFA Euro 2008
* Haze
* MotorStorm Complete

Americans can also look forward to the release of SingStar, a game their cousins across the pond have been enjoying since before Christmas. We look forward to seeing videos of drunken Americans popping up on My SingStar Online over the next few weeks. We've noticed that Play.com are already stating that Haze is in stock and ready to be dispatched. No idea if that means you'll get it before Friday, but it's worth a try.

Not that you need to, considering Haze has a global release, but feel free to import any of the above games. Your PS3 will run them all. Release dates are constantly subject to change, so make sure to check with your local retailer before doing anything rash.

Lay your eyes on The Conduit and fall in love

Following up the screens and tech demo we all got to check out (and get excited over), High Voltage has now released a rather lengthy trailer for their proposed FPS The Conduit. What do we have to say? Well, much like you will be after seeing the video above, we're in love. We need this.

Everything from the amount of on-screen action right down to the badass weapon used in the beginning has us pumped. What say you all?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Catch a nasty ghost in this Ghostbusters gameplay footage

Thanks to this fairly recent Ghostbusters gameplay footage, we certainly aren't afraid of ghosts anymore. The game looks pretty nice and we hope it jump-starts the classic franchise back to life -- a lot of lesser movies and TV series' have been getting brought back, after all. What's interesting, but not in the video, is the use of Sixaxis for the PS3: apparently, you use it to control the trajectory of your ghost-bustin' stream. Of course, crossing them is a bad idea unless you're facing the final boss, we'd imagine.

GTAIV sells like crazy, console sales neck and neck

It's that time again when corporate execs are held accountable for their actions, sales figures are calculated and the North American "digits" are revealed. It's time for April NPD! W00t!

Last month's video game competition was a heated race between Microsoft and Sony as the Xbox 360 was able to move 188,000 units narrowly beating out the PS3's 187,100. That news on top of Microsoft announcing the 360's 10 million U.S. milestone make it a pretty good month for team Microsoft. Though, Nintendo's Wii continues to dominate even without Grand Theft Auto IV's help moving an amazing 714,200 consoles. Speaking of GTAIV, it rocked the final week of April selling a jaw-dropping 1.85 million units on the 360 alone which is nearly double that of the 1 million units it sold on the PS3. And that's always good to hear. Check the break for a complete rundown of the April NPD hardware and software data.

[Via Joystiq]

April Hardware Sales
1. Wii - 714,200
2. DS - 414,800

Saving extra cars in GTA IV

In GTA IV there are numerous locations for the player to park their car, in order for it to be saved for another gameplay session. Unfortunately these spaces seem pretty small, with you seemingly only able to fit one or two cars in them. I am pleased to announce that this is not the case.

If you want to keep a large car collection, you can do so, as it turns out that only one wheel of the vehicle needs to be inside the designated parking area in order for it to be saved. This means that with a little patience, and some careful driving, it is possible to save several different cars in one parking space.

There is one problem with this method however, and that is the fact that it can be murder to try and get out the car that is rammed in behind all the rest. Still, it's quite a neat little trick, and means that you should be able to fit in at least 4 cars comfortably.

What do you think? Will you be trying to cram in as many cars as possible, or keeping it nice and need with just a couple? Let us know by leaving your comments below.

PS3 Trophies coming via PSN as soon as June?

What with the continual delay for Sony's Playstation Home, the latest rumblings from the industry, and a mysterious report from Sony's inner circle confirms that we may be about to see a new PSN update for the inclusion of Xbox style achievements, through the form of Trophies.

According to this report, 2D trophies located on the PS3's XMB may launch this June with firmware version 2.4 (which should also introduce in-game XMB access). These trophies are reportedly different to the 3D ones set to feature in Home later this year.

Another report over on Kotaku substantiates the claim somewhat. It points to a Sony fact sheet about upcoming PSN title PixelJunk Eden, which shows that one of the game's "key features" will be "Trophy Support", although it's unclear exactly what this is.

This news may be of certain interest to many consumers interested in the rise of MGS4 next month, to coincide with a new update perhaps for in-game achievements.

New Burnout Paradise Location Revealed

Criterion Games unveiled today a new location from the upcoming Davis update for Burnout Paradise.

Here's a great video from the world team. These guys worked on the incredible game world that you'll recognise now as Paradise City.

Since we're releasing images of our new island location, we thought it would be great to give a little insight into how the Paradise City mainland came together.

Here, one of our leads, JohnL, concentrates on a single, small area - the Fish Market in the South Docks (just off Manners Ave). You'll get to see how each of it's distinct components evolved through development.

Nintendo loses $21M lawsuit

Nintendo has been ordered by the courts to pay 21 million dollars to Anascape, a smalltime developer based in Texas. The ruling comes after deciding that Big N infringed on 12 patents filed by Anascape to make these controllers:

* Wii Classic Controller
* Wavebird
* GameCube Controller

The patents included things like "Analog Sensors with Snap-Through Tactile Feedback" and "Remote Controller with Analog Pressure Sensors". Charlie Scibetta, a spokesman for Nintendo said they are looking to appeal the decision and cut down the $21M sum considerably.

Anascape also filed a similar lawsuit against Microsoft, who settled the case for an undisclosed amount.

The Story Of Killzone 2,Straight From Sony

We're going to have to wait until next year to experience the hotly anticipated Killzone 2. Right now, Joystiq's Chris Grant is getting some time with the title (we're insanely jealous!). While we wait to hear back, we'd like to present you the story, straight from the fine folks at Sony.

"Two years after the Helghast assault on Vekta, the ISA is taking the fight to the enemy's home world of Helghan. The ISA goal is direct: capture the Helghast leader, Emperor Visari, and bring the Helghast war machine to a halt. Assuming the role of Sev, a battle-hardened veteran and a member of the special forces unit known as the Legion, players will lead a group of highly trained soldiers on a mission to take out the Helghast threat. For Sev and his squad, the invasion of Helghan is just the beginning. Tasked with securing Pyrrhus, the Capital City, the team quickly discovers that the Helghast are a formidable enemy on their home planet. Not only have they adjusted to the planet's hostile conditions, they have also harnessed a source of power they can now use against the ISA. Sev discovers his squad isn't just fighting enemy forces – their fiercest opponent may be the planet itself."

From what we saw at our E3 preview, we know exactly how terrifying the weather in Killzone 2 can be. Massive thunderstorms can come in at whim, thanks to a new technology developed by the Helghast. To say that it will make for some epic battles is quite the understatement. Stay tuned for more.

New Prince of Persia named and dated

(via Computer And Video Games) - The new game will be known as Prince of Persia: Heir Apparent, according to the latest issue of Game Informer. Without any other information, we can't even hazard a guess as to what that's supposed to mean, if it means anything at all. Meanwhile, Ubisoft has confirmed that the game will launch in its third fiscal quarter, meaning we can expect it between October and December.

411 On PSP GPS

ITmedia Games has shots, as well as new info, on the upcoming PSP GPS attachment and the software that will take advantage of it. The (pictured) MAPLUS navigation system will ship in December and have GPS mapping and navigation functions tailored for folks walking, biking, or driving and will include points of interest. It appears that mapping information can be updated via the Web and be stored on the Memory Stick. Pricing for the software is currently undecided.

The GPS attachment will also be used for games, including the upcoming golf title Everybody's Golf Course, a spin off of the Minna no Golf series. Using real world golf courses, the GPS functions can be used during your real life golf game to give you location feedback while on the links.

Metal Gear Portable Ops will also take advantage of the GPS attachment to give you location specific maps. This new gameplay mode will require you to go to specific locations to interact with enemies. This all sounds pretty cool, but I hope it doesn't require me to actually go outdoors. That's scary! 13 Year Old Steals Dad's Credit Card to Buy Hookers And Play Halo

A 13 year old from Texas who stole his Dad's credit card and ordered two hookers from an escort agency, has today been convicted of fraud and given a three year community order.

Ralph Hardy, a 13 year old from Newark, Texas confessed to ordering an extra credit card from his father's existing credit card company, and took his friends on a $30,000 spending spree, culminating in playing "Halo" on an Xbox with a couple of hookers in a Texas motel.

The credit card company involved said it was regular practice to send extra credit cards out as long as all security questions are answered.

The escort girls who were released without charge, told the arresting officers something was up when the kids said they would rather play Xbox than get down to business.

Police said they were alerted to the motel by a concerned delivery clerk, whom after delivering supplies of Dr Pepper, Fritos and Oreos had been asked by the kids where they could score some chicks and were willing to pay. They explained they had just made a big score at a "World of Warcraft" tournament and wanted to get some relaxation. On noting the boys age the delivery clerk informed the authorities.

When police arrived at the motel they found $3,000 in cash, numerous electronic gadgets, an Xbox video console with numerous games, and the two local escort girls.

Ralph had reportedly told police that his father wouldn't mind, as it was his birthday last week and he had forgot to get him a present. The father, a lawyer said he had been too busy, but would take him on a surprise trip to Disneyland instead.

Asked why he ordered two escorts, Ralph said he thought it was the thing to do when you win a "World of Warcraft" tournament. They told the suspicious working girls they were people of restricted growth working with a traveling circus, and as State law does not allow those with disabilities to be discriminated against they had no right to refuse them.

The $1,000 a night girls sensing something up played "Halo" on the Xbox with the kids, instead of selling their sexual services.

Ralph's ambition is to one day become a politician.

A PSP in iPhone Clothing-iPSP

Can’t get enough of your iPhone’s interface? Why not skin your PSP with the IPSP software? You won’t be able to instantly transform the PSP’s screen into a touch screen one, but you be able to navigate through a grid of applications both web-based and built-in to the PSP.

Here’s my take: First Windows Mobile devices, now the PSP. These things seem to be great for trying out and then figuring out how to uninstall it. Snore, snore. Wake me up when someone changes the interface to my microwave, GPS system in my car, or my clock radio. Then I’ll take notice.

Xbox 540 coming in 2009

A dramatic and perhaps visible change will happen next year: TSMC plans to begin producing the Valhalla chip, which will be the foundation of the mid-cycle refresh of the Xbox 360, thus called ‘Xbox 2.5’ or simply ‘Xbox 540’ (360+180), in fall of 2009. This new chip is apparently much more than a die-shrink and end up as a system-on-a-chip design. This change is likely to enable to redesign the Xbox 360 casing and go towards a slim-design, much like what Sony did with the Gen1 and Gen2 PS2. We believe that TSMC will use a 45 nm process for this Multi-Chip-Module package (CPU+GPU+eDRAM).

There are also some interesting pieces of information that Microsoft is shopping for a more efficient cooling solution – efficient in more ways than just one: Several people close to the cooling industry told us that Microsoft approached them and asked for better and cheaper cooling than what is used in the Xbox 360 right now. Some may claim that the current Xbox 360 cooler design is already as cheap as it gets, but we have no doubts that Microsoft will find a way to drop the cost once again.

EA loses $454 million in fiscal '08 because of acquisition costs

Apparently, Bioware and Pandemic were expensive.Army of Two, Burnout Paradise and the continued strength of Rock Band drove Electronic Arts to $1.127 billion in sales for the fiscal fourth quarter, an 84 percent increase over the same period last year - but rather than turn a profit, EA took a $94 million loss.

Despite having 27 titles that sold over one million units during the year and a total $3.7 billion in sales, that loss on the quarter was only a portion of the company's overall $454 million loss on the year, a hefty blow after last fiscal year's $76 million profit.

However, both sales and revenue growth were decent for the company, beating analyst expectations. Crunching the numbers, it appears as if EA could have made around $30 million, if not for the costs largely due to its acquisitions - specifically the $620 million purchase of BioWare and Pandemic in October 2007, finalized in January 2008.

While Activision recently said it's the number one publisher in North America in dollars, EA says that its 19 percent market share in the region makes it the leader; EA's market share in Europe is 20 percent.
Instead of focusing on the loss, EA highlighted its successes, reporting itself the number one third-party Wii publisher in Europe throughout the year with 15 percent market share, eight points up from the year previous. Its North American market share on the Wii also was up one percentage point to 11 percent.

The company's "EA Partners" global distribution unit saw its strongest year yet, the company said, thanks to Rock Band and The Orange Box. As for EA's owned IP, the company gained a few in 2008 with MySims, Army of Two, Skate, Boogie, EA Playground and Smarty Pants, and gained development talent through the BioWare and Pandemic acquisitions. During the year EA also signed an agreement with Hasbro for the exclusive rights to create games based on Monopoly, Scrabble, Yahtzee, Nerf, Tonka and Littlest Pet Shop.

Notably attending to its prior bad acts, EA also said that its December 2007 employee satisfaction survey showed "significant improvemente" since 2004, with a double-digit gain in "employee engagement."

"A year ago, we committed to an aggressive change agenda at EA," said EA CEO John Riccitiello. "Our employees stepped up to the challenge and we finished fiscal year 2008 with non-GAAP revenue up 30% to $4 billion - a record for any third-party publisher. Our operating margins were flat to our prior year."

"On balance, we're very pleased with our revenue growth, but not yet happy with our profit margins. In fiscal 2009, we expect to deliver another $1 billion in revenue growth and to double our operating profit on the strength of our slate of titles."

GTA IV Tops 1 Million in UK, Holds on to No.1-360 Version Tops Chart

TheGamerReviews writes: It seems the British public can’t get enough of Grand Theft Auto IV, as overall sales have reached 1 Million units sold across the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. This is despite a hefty 77% drop in sales this week. Rockstar is not the only one happy, as Microsoft can break a smile as 62 percent of GTA IV sales last week were on Xbox 360, widening the gap between the consoles as it was 55 percent the week before. It seems GTA is no longer considered a Playstation game as most of the sales in the UK now on Xbox 360.

WiiWare Launches Today

Today the much anticipated WiiWare will be available to the masses. The download service that has been receiving alot of praise from gamers, will be giving smaller development companies a shot at releasing some titles. It has become a massive undertaking to release a game with current video game technology. Without proper funding, or a solid publisher backing your title, it more than likely won’t see the light of day. With WiiWare, the landscape looks like it could be changing. Without need of a publisher for physically creating, packaging and distributing the titles, small developers finally get their shot.

Gold Fever Hits an All Time High with the Upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company Demo (X360)

The single player and multiplayer demo hits Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store on June 5.
Official Press Release | May 9, 2008

You've been drafted to 'B' Company! DICE, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that a demo for its highly anticipated summer release, Battlefield: Bad Company will be available on Xbox Live Marketplace* and PlayStation Store* on June 5. Players will land on the battlefield as part of the 'B' or Bad Company, a wayward band of soldiers more interested in the pursuit of gold and personal financial gain than following the rules. Gamers will get a sneak peek at how tactical destruction changes the way shooters are played, both offline and online in the single player and multiplayer demo.

Players can also gain early access to the demo by pre-ordering the game through participating retailers in North America and Europe. More details on this special pre-order campaign can be found at http://www.battlefield.com/badcompany.

Players who missed their opportunity to participate in the closed beta get a second chance to experience the intense multiplayer Gold Rush mode on the Oasis map while the single player portion starts gamers at the beginning of their 'B' company career. The single player portion of the demo sets the stage for players as they're introduced to the humorous and sometimes irreverent set of characters that make up the 'B' company. As gamers embark on their quest for gold, they'll experience the same classic Battlefield gameplay including access to numerous vehicles, weapons and open maps as well as the new tactical destruction that only Battlefield: Bad Company can deliver.

In stores on June 25 in North America and June 27 in Europe, Battlefield: Bad Company is developed by Sweden-based developer DICE (Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment, www.dice.se). The game will be available for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and is rated "T" by the ESRB and "16+" by PEGI. It might not be the biggest splash in this lake of information, but for those who played Electronic Arts' first SKATE title, you should be glad to know another game is on its way. This isn't to be confused with the next game in the franchise that's coming out only on the Wii, dubbed SKATE it, where you use a balance board to ... well ... skate. As for the true sequel, no further information on the game, its release date, or suggested retail price are known right now. But it's in the works, so we'll keep you updated as information arrives.

Blu-ray movie releases for the week of May 11

Hey it's Mother's Day today! Why not buy your Mom a Blu-ray film! But wait, you probably couldn't buy her one from this list though; these Blu-ray movies won't be out until Tuesday. Bummer. Anyway, she probably won't like most of the films this week -- they're looking rather butch.

* Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
* Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
* Mrs. Doubtfire
* Ozzfest: 10th Anniversary
* Shinobi: Heart Under Blade (Special Edition)
* The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
* Untraceable
* Youth Without Youth

In case you want to get Mom a belated present, perhaps she would like this week's Youth Without Youth, a Coppola drama set in WWII. You know what that means right? You'll probably like that one, too. If that doesn't work, Mrs. Doubtfire is a contingency plan. "Heloo!"

So, when my gentle mom came from little ol' Tallahassee, Florida to visit the GR offices, I took it upon myself to share something with her that’s been eating up every free moment of my time: I gave her the gift of Grand Theft Auto IV. Can you hear the birds?

My mom's no gamer by any stretch of the imagination. The only thing I’ve seen her play for any length of time is Zuma and a slot machine. I’ll admit, my intention was to shock her into cardiac arrest - something Tom Green-ish, or dare I say, Bam Margera-esque, but wouldn’t you know it? The old bitch loved it! She was killing prostitutes, executing cops and ignoring story missions like a 12-year-old going through Adderall withdrawal.

Skate It on Wii and Nintendo DS

Last year, Electronic Arts and Black Box literally reinvented the skateboarding videogame design with Skate, an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 experience that put heavy focus on dual-analog stick control for its gameplay. What were once automatic button presses in games like Tony Hawk now had to be worked for by flicking your thumbs to pull them off.

Because of the dual-analog focus, it wasn't surprising to see that the original game didn't make it to the Nintendo Wii or the Nintendo DS – two systems that lacked the "standard" control offered by the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. But that hasn't stopped the publisher from trying – in 2008, Electronic Arts will release Skate It, a spin-off of last year's console design that will focus on utilizing Wii remote and Nintendo DS touch screen for its skateboarding control. The Wii version will also support the Wii Balance Board that will ship with Wii Fit in two weeks.

Skate It will be officially announced and revealed by the company next week at the company's press event in San Francisco, but we were given the opportunity to grill Skate It's executive producer Scott Blackwood and get some details regarding the Nintendo spinoffs on the Wii and the Nintendo DS.

Verbinski to direct BioShock movie

Take-Two has announced a deal with Universal Studios to bring hit Xbox 360 shooter BioShock to the big screen.

The film will be directed by Gore Verbinski, whose previous credits include the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and The Ring. John Logan, who wrote Gladiator, The Aviator and Sweeney Todd, is in talks to produce the screenplay.

Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick was responsible for negotiating the deal with Universal. "BioShock has been hailed as one of the most highly cinematic and richly plotted titles in interactive entertainment, making it extremely well-suited to film," he commented.

"In partnering with Universal and Gore Verbinski, we have assembled a team that respects the uniqueness of BioShock and will translate it into a powerful movie experience. Our ability to attract a major studio and unparalleled creative team speaks volumes about the strength of our BioShock franchise.

"It also demonstrates how Take-Two is delivering value based on our strategy of creating and owning our industry's most powerful intellectual property," he added.

And according to Variety, Verbinski is excited about BioShock's unique setting and storyline. Apparently he's particularly inspired by the Big Daddies and the Little Sisters, plus the art deco stylings of Rapture.

"I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential," he stated. "Of all the games I've played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative."

Verbinski has already been consulting with Ken Levine, the game's creative director, but it's not clear if he'll have an official role in the film's production.
